Long Beach Township received 2 grants from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation ( NFWF) for bay island restoration planning projects for 5 islands off of the township. First project site of focus is Clam Cove Reserve, adjacent to the field station which is a 22-acre wetland parcel purchased by the township through the municipal open space trust, in cost share with Ocean County Natural Lands Trust. Below are presentations by our partners detailing the projects, as well as general information about the NJ Bay Islands Initiative and the data base of islands in the Bay Island Restoration Planner (BIRP).
In December 2023, Monmouth University installed a tide gauge at the field station to collect wave measurements as part of the NFWF community resilience grant project. This new addition will record wave and wake data to inform our restoration planning efforts for near by Clam Cove Reserve shoreline. This tide gauge data complements the data trends from our weather station, which is part of the Jersey Shore Mesonet of other stations in our watershed. The live stream camera also on the roof of the Field Station complements these data sets with visuals of bay conditions. As well as offering year-round live sun set views!
